jsresumeI take a ballet class once per week, but I am still severely over weight. What can I do to motivate myself to work out more. I have tried to work out about 3-4 times per week, but I only gain more weight. ξEFFREY. Have you tried checking your measurements/clothing size instead? I often find when I start working out after a break my muscle mass increases but my weight stays the same (or worse, goes up!) because muscle is denser than fat. If your measurements aren't going down either, you might want to look at your diet - an increase in exercise might be increasing your appetite and therefore your consumption even though you don't need to eat more. If neither of these things are a factor, you might want to see your doctor for some blood tests - if you have a liver or thyroid condition this may be preventing your weight loss. I had these tests done recently and, other than elevated cholesterol, found there was nothing wrong; good in the sense that I'm ok but bad in the sense that it means my only issue is not getting off my butt enough ;)

GoddessMel I'm doing something like that - I'm in the second week of a "six-pack abs" program (I have absolutely no faith that, biologically, I can actually achieve said abs, but it's a good-looking weight training program) and I'm doing a full body circuit workout 3x a week, walking 3x a week and then adding other activities such as cycling and walking in an attempt to reduce the boredom factor setting in too soon (which is my usual reason for giving up early in a new program). Started this new program today - wish me luck!!

I try to get in 3 good runs a week between 40 and 60 mins, as well as that we like to hike the mountain trails around here, I guess about 2 hours per week. I plan to add some core exercises for my abs and back but I think I'm too lazy to do them regularly! |

I have tried to work out about 3-4 times per week, but I only gain more weight. ξEFFREY. Take a look at your overall activity and what intensity you work at. Unfortunately working out once a week (and I'm guessing the intensity isn't so high with barre work, plié's and arabesques) might be fun and social but it won't make a big dint in your weight loss. A very large friend of mine joined a swing dancing class which was great for him as he was shy about meeting girls and self conscious about his weight. The combination of a social activity where people aren't there to pick up and having to concentrate on the dance steps plus the fact his heart rate was raised for an hour at a time, 3 times a week, had a great effect on his weight and his social life. If fat/weight loss is your aim, try to work out at lest 40 mins straight where your having to breathe a little hard so that you can have a little conversation without gasping for air but you have to breathe harder than if you're just sitting on the sofa. walking hills is great, swimming laps, social tennis (if your joints are OK with it), etc are all good ideas for you.
Good luck.

Try Pilates or using a 'swiss' ball - they make it a little more interesting. I also find kickboxing-based workouts (eg Tae Bo) are doing wonders for my abs/core!

The best workout combo for me is resistance training (stability ball), static training (yoga) along with running. For some reason, those three have shown better results then I when use to lift weights a lot. |

I recently started working out again. I work full-time as a teacher, attend seminary full-time, and I'm in the Ohio Army National Guard - as well as a husband and father! I have set goals of dropping my weight from 189 to 175 by April 15, 2009. I also have set a goal to run 3 times a week, with the goal of doing more based on a runnersworld.com workout to eventually work my way up to a marathon during 2009. |

I'm doing the couch to 5k in 2 months training plus weights and yoga on my rest days. I don't worry too much about what the scales say, I measure myself instead, but I do keep my calorie intake to 1200 per day, I am over weight, so the aim is to slim down slowly, be able to run 5k by April and have a lot less of me by May. |

Hi all Well it's been a few months but I'm back and ready to get back on track! Had some time of no motivation to exercise, eat right, socialise, do anything I used to actually... recently dragged myself off to a new GP with (I thought) yet another virus that had knocked me down, and was diagnosed with depression. Not really a surprise given that a number of my family also suffer, but a bit of a drag nonetheless. Still to sort out treatment options, but one thing my GP did say was to get back into regular exercise - apparently the endorphins are good for the brain chemistry as well as being good for your body, and just the act of doing something is apparently helpful. So this week I started taking casual lunchtime walks again and it did actually help me get through the day. Tomorrow I'm getting back to my weekly Pilates session, and on Monday I'll start a short (2-week) program of activities that I always used to enjoy, in an attempt to kickstart my brain and body back into motion. The plan is this:
Once I get back into a routine, I'll change up/increase the program in September to start getting my fitness back and my weight heading back down to a healthy level.

Well it's been a few months but I'm back and ready to get back on track! Wish you the best of luck. I also often have a tendency to "fall off the wagon" so to say, and like you I think that it is always better to start over time after time with a program than to give up. A little here and a little there can make a big diffrence. One man that recently have made a lasting impression on me to keep trying is Randy Pausch; if you don´t know who it is you must see his Last Lecture - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo . Set goals, be realistic but optimistic, and simply never give up. By trying you have already proved that you can imagine it and thus also succed one day. |

I jog each morning Monday to Friday for about 30 minutes. Play at least 2 rounds of golf (18 holes) each week.

Just signed up to return to bellydancing classes - did these last year and really enjoyed it. 1 hour 2x a week, with a fun instructor doing something I enjoy. This will be added to my September routine of:
Also as much incidental/practical cardio as I can, ie cycling to and from work on non-dancing days (need my car to get to classes), lunchtime walks with friends instead of going out to lunch or coffee, cycle/walk to errands instead of using the car, walk my dog after work (non-dancing days) and on weekends etc. Will also aim to fit in yoga/meditation sessions a couple of times a week to help with mood and sleep. Wish me luck!

GoddessMel This will be added to my September routine of:
Also as much incidental/practical cardio as I can...
Well this program kind of worked... ended up not going to belly dancing as I couldn't find the spare cash, and most of my cardio has been during the day rather than mornings. I've also been going through depression so wasn't as active as I needed to be, but treatment is helping that. My current routine is 1-2 full body weights sessions a week (30-45 mins each) and 30-45 minute lunch time walks as often as workload and weather permit (we've had crazy hot days here recently). Also trying to do some form of stretch/relaxation each day (mostly using yoga for this). Next week I plan to add cycling to the routine as I've reworked my old Malvern Star :) I've added baskets so I can use the bike to travel to and from work and to do nearby errands. This should add up to 30-40 minutes several times a week.

I've just signed myself up for four major events for 2010 (another 3 in waiting). These four are a series and you take your medals and out them together to form a huge mega-medal. So, I'm doing one 10k, two half marathons and a duathlon. Should be interesting! |

well im just starting to start exerciseing and whatnot. i plan to run on the every day for a half an hour and do the standard exercises (pushups, sit-ups etc...) then after i get into a groove i have some weighted clothing to make it more challenging when things become to easy. i have never exercised more then once in a great while but i am not overweight although my BMI would suggest otherwise... |
