Cycling is my big passion. I have been competing for 15 years and now I mostly train others. Any other cycle fanatics here? -- Luc

Ironman very nice! Where are you doing the competition? What are the distances in each "discipline" in the Ironman? I must say the idea of triathlon is very exciting but it is not for me I think. I have never enjoyed running. Yes currently I live in Brussels but I am originally from France. And I agree the cycling training conditions here are very nice although I miss the mountains and the steep hills :)

The race is in Sweden, Kalmar (www.kalmartri.com). This race has been a quite small competition, but this year the race has suddenly become very popular. This year, there will be some 500 competitors (one of the biggest Ironman-distans kompetitions i Europe). The distances are 3,8km swim - 180km bicycle - 42km run. Huh... I hope I will survive!! :-) The most important is the cycling. And you never become a good triathlet, if you don't love biking. You gotta do the miles, so to speak. So... perhaps I will see you on the start line in Kalmar next year? :-) //Håkan

My weight is 150 # female If I ride a moderately challenging (to me) 15 mile bike ride say 1 - 3 days per week... What kind of results should I look forward to seeing in regards to a mildly plump (survival/stress fat) physique? And in what length of time? I am also walking 2-3 miles 5-6 days per week. It would be great to hear from anyone willing to comment and thank you in advance for your feedback. I think I am finally ready to "just do it" and get in the best shape of my life! Chris

I think that biking is one of the best sports when it comes to loose weight and gain good physics. Biking is not stressful for the knees, so you may ride much longer than you may run. One recommendation from me (thriathlet), is not to look at how far you ride in miles, but rather how long you ride in hours. To get results (and this goes for running as well) I would recommend to bicycle every second day 45-90 minutes (45-75 if you run). One more tip: If you exercise every second day (i.e. 3-4 times/week) the training gets fun. You start to longing for the next ride. However, if you do it more seldom (1-2 days/week), you might start to feel some what "lacy", and suddenly a months has passed without any training. At least I work like that. Good luck (and excuse my poor English). YOU WILL DO IT!! Regards from a rainy Sweden, Håkan

Helo, I can only agree with HakanLarsson, well written post. As HakanLarsson said I agree that you should try to keep the exercising over 60 minutes when you bicycle. Also try to push yourself a bit every week so you don't go out on your bike achieving the same results every time, then you will not progress in your training. If you bicycle regularly for a month you should start seeing good progress in both your endurance and weight loss! Remember that the first month can feel like a pain but be strong and it will get very fun. I can also only agree with HakanLarsson about how often to train. Some people say that 3-4 times per week takes too much time but after a month or two it will be very much more rewarding and result in more fun and better results. Regards from a rainy belgium as well :) Luc

Hi Chris, you're asking about what you can expect in results. It's all depending of what level you've started on. Did you do any physical activity before you started to ride bike? If you where doing nothing the changes are gonna come faster than if you allearady where doing some kind of activity. So it's pretty hard to say. If you where doing nothing before you started, I also would recomend you to take it slow in the beginning. Babysteps. Start with e.g. 30 min. bikerideing. When that is ok, take it up to 45 min. after that 60 min... etc. Take small babysteps and put them together into a big step, closer to your goal. When you gets over 60 min. challenge your self and make it harder, try to make it more intenst. Good luck!

i cycled for just over 20 mins mon-fri. can't really afford to be out much longer than that. its hard to balance life, i have 2 children that i like to play with when i get home. when they go to bed i go for my ride, then have dinner when i get home (i don't like riding on an full stomach) seeing as though i go to bed at 9:30 most nights, i need to eat at least 2 hours before i go to bed, so 20mins is all i can afford at this point in time. in 2 months work is moving to a new location with a gym in the building that i'll join, then i'll be able to cycle in the gym for longer & take up swimming again

Given your experience with tri's, do you feel that riding would be of benefit for running? I am seriously amping up my workouts now. I have gotten "the call" to be part of a competition team at work, so I have some major work to do to be at the level I want to be. My running is not where I want it to be, so I have been hitting the treadmill about 3 or 4 times a week. I lift 5-6 days most weeks. But, my cardio is where I need most of my work. I bought a stand for my bike so that I can ride indoors now (winter here) and did 30 minutes on it Saturday nite, after a 20 min run and legs workout. Was pretty happy with it for not having been riding for quite awhile.
