Helping Our Aging Parents Stay in Their Homes With Simple Home Renovation

Handyman and Customer greet each other for a service call

We spend our whole youth waiting and pining to join the ranks of the grown-ups, so we can set off on our adventures and have authority over our lives. If we don't mess up in our prime too badly, we'll get to see our golden years and reap the fruits of our labors.

It's no surprise that our parents don't want to give up their hard earned freedom and privacy when they've worked so hard to build it. As a child of aging or elderly parents, it's hard to see them start to struggle with the day-to-day tasks of maintaining a home.

But, just because your loved ones are coming across some obstacles, doesn't mean they need to move in an attempt to downsize. The goal should be to keep your parents in their home as long as possible to avoid a costly, stressful move; and instead, all of you should work together to remove the stumbling blocks that would make remaining in the home difficult.

  • It's not uncommon for aging parents to need help with some certain, simple aspects of making home comfortably livable. Often the entrances to the home are the first and easiest places to start. Bad backs, hips, and knees can become a hindrance to climbing porch and deck steps, severely limiting the enjoyment of one's home, even making running errands like grocery shopping difficult. Contacting a handyman or a contractor to install ramps to your home will make access easy and safer, reducing the chance of falls and injuries.

  • And, speaking of falls, installing a grab bar in the home's showers and baths in a great idea. Preventing falls in the slipperiest room in the house is very important. Keeping your parents safe to avoid serious injury that will land them in a rehab or even a continuous care facility is the aim.

  • It's a good idea to hire a handyman to install carpeting or a runner on wood stairs. Slippery wood is a danger to anyone, especially someone who isn't sure-footed to begin with or has trouble with his or her vision. It's also not a bad idea to affix area rugs to the floor so as not to become a tripping hazard. Edges of a rug can be a mine field of domestic dangers in a home.

  • And while thinking preemptively is the best course of action to keep Mom and Dad safe, bringing in a little technology doesn't hurt either. Having an emergency response system installed could benefit your parents if an accident does occur and they can't access their phones to call for help.

  • Replace cumbersome and hard to turn door knobs with easy to use levers

  • Hire a go-to-guy, so to speak, to move furniture and whatnot around. When your folks can no longer move the deck furniture in and out for the season, it's good to have someone available in a snap to do the heavy lifting.

In general, having a handyman handy to help your parents out around the house with small home improvement jobs and repairs is a great idea.
